Girls Inc. of New York City’s Eureka! Program
LifeSci Advisors was proud to sponsor Girls Inc. of New York City’s inaugural Summer Institute of its Eureka! program in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education in New York City for low-income and minority girls. The program, which has been offered in other cities in the U.S., is open to middle and high school-aged girls and includes a comprehensive educational approach involving mentorship, physical education, field trips, internship placement, and college preparedness training, in addition to a STEM curriculum. The summer institute is part of the longer term Eureka! program, which will stay with the girls in the program through their high school graduation.
In addition to sponsoring the program, LifeSci Advisors helped organize a field trip for the Eureka! Program participants to the Department of Orthopaedics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to perform hands-on laboratory activities and experiments and meet with leading medical researchers and doctors. One of the highlights of the trip was when the girls got a chance to speak with Leesa Galatz, MD, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Mount Sinai and the first and only woman chair of an academic orthopaedics department in the country.
